A Study: Le Conte's Sparrow

Note the heavily streaked flanks and sides with an ochre buff on this Le Conte's Sparrow. Grasshopper Sparrows will show the ochre buff on the sides and flanks but the sides and flanks will not be heavily streaked. Photo by: Adam Wood

Note the sharply pointed tail feathers on this Le Conte's Sparrow. This is a trait shared by all Ammodramus genus sparrows and it is why they are known as sharp-tailed sparrows. Photo by: Adam Wood

Note how the head of this Le Conte's Sparrow does not appear completely flat but slightly rounded. All other Ammodromus genus sparrows appear flat headed with heavier bills. Photo by: Adam Wood

Again note the ochre buffed streaked sides on this Le Conte's Sparrow but also note that the ochre buffed collar at the base of the throat with no streaking. A Henslow's Sparrow will have a collar at the base of the throat but it will be streaked and have a lime green buff. Photo by: Adam Wood
